Importance of Rivers--Danube River Do Now

Danube River: Why is it so Important?

The Danube is the 2nd largest river in Europe and flows through much of Eastern Europe.  It rises in Germany, then flows about 1,770 miles through nine countries--Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, and the Ukraine.  The Eastern European cities of Belgrade, Braila, Bratislava, Budapest and Galati are all on the Danube.

What factors make the Danube so important in your opinion?  Write a clear paragraph about the river, explaining its importance in Eastern Europe.  (Use your knowledge of rivers in general to help you develop your paragraph.  In addition, analyze the map below.)

Possible factors--economics such as freight transport, generation of hydroelectricity, industrial water supply, fishing, irrigation for farming...Maps show numerous major cities and ports are located along the river such as, Izmail, Ukraine; Galaţi and Brăila, Romania; Ruse, Bulgaria; Belgrade, Serbia ; Budapest, Hungary; Bratislava, Slovakia; Vienna, Austria; and Regensburg, Germany, are among the major ports.
